HENRY'S K

In Phonics Pathways, Henry worked on 4 letters words with short vowel sounds. We mostly covered a half a page per day, but he did manage a full page a couple of times as well. We tried doing some of the first Explode the Code book, but I'm not sure that he's really ready for the amount of writing involved on some of the pages, so we may drop it for a few months. He learned to write the letters E through H in both upper and lowercase forms and did a couple of days of reviewing previous letters as well. For read alouds, we finished Surprise Island and moved onto the third book in the Boxcar children series, The Yellow House Mystery by Warner.

We've also continued our daily Bible reading covering from the boy Samuel through the anointing of David as king.
Math is still fairly simple: reviews of skip counting and one or two pages of Miquon Orange per day. His favorite page was the dot to dot pictured. There were also some patterning pages and pages of counting and writing numbers. He continues to enjoy his critical thinking books, and science has been a big hit. Over the past two weeks, we've read about polar bears, predator and prey, snowy owls, wolverines, beavers, and wolves.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742687985614907420.post-68469057829655770092014-01-23T13:36:00.000-08:002014-02-05T13:53:17.736-08:00Creative Corner: A Hawk, Figurines, and fun painting

GEOMETRY: Jessie completed the review sets at the end of chapter 8 covering transformations, scored her first perfect score on the chapter test, and began working on the midterm review sets this week.

GREAT BOOKS: This week's assignment was to pick a thesis, write an outline, and turn it into a five paragraph essay on Homer's Odyssey. We briefly discussed plot, character, and theme using Teaching the Classics; but I felt like I could keep the discussion brief since the Vandiver lectures that she listened to were excellent. She finished her rough draft, and I'll mark some changes for editing on Monday. The basic idea is there, but she needs to edit and add in some more detail and quotes to better make her point.

ENGLISH: I've decided that English as a subject was taking up too much time each day. For the next 6-8 weeks, she going to take a break from grammar and concentrate on finishing up CW Herodotus. This week's assignments were a mishmash of catch up work: a commonplace essay that hadn't been done, further developing a few paragraphs, and finishing out her final lessons from the week before break. It's not all done quite yet because she became sick on Wednesday, but we'll keep working on it over the weekend.

LATIN: She completed a quiz on chapter 24, completed the exercises in chapter 25 covering reflexive pronouns and possessive adjectives, and began working on the chapter reading. She also had a quiz on the present active and perfect active systems and reviewed the corresponding passive systems for next week.

SPANISH: Her Spanish covered vocabulary relating to months, seasons, and weather this week. She covered the conjugation of hacer and some of the idiomatic expressions for which it is used. She also covered some of idiomatic uses for tener, the conjugation of decir, and the use of decir plus que to introduce a clause. She received a high A on Friday's quiz.

HISTORY: She jumped back to cover lesson 10 in Foundations of Western Civilization about Greek culture and completed the corresponding section in Spielvogel taking notes and writing a paragraph answer to the focus question. She also read chapter 66 in Bauer's History of the Ancient World and chose Egyptian gods and religion for her first paper topic.

SCIENCE: Her assignment this week was to take notes on chapter 6 this week. She is currently finishing this up as I'm typing because her science falls on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. It was midweek when she became sick.

MUSIC APPRECIATION: She listened to two more Handel cds.

MATH: Violet covered 5 more section in chapter 4 of NEM on decimals.

ENGLISH: She wrote her book report for The Fellowship of the Ring and began reading Age of the Fable by Bulfinch. She's not thrilled with it, so I may switch her to the Guerber myths if I can get it downloaded from project Gutenburg. She began the second Caesar's English book and passed her first vocabulary test. In R&S she worked with personal, demonstrative, and indefinite pronouns. She also completed a lesson on organizing notes for a paper. In CW, she spent the week analyzing one of Benjamin Franklin's articles for the Spectator.
LANGUAGES: In Latin, she passed her quizzes on chapters 13 and 14 and reviewed third declension adjectives in lesson 15. For Greek, we took the week to catch up on vocabulary and grammar memory work.

HISTORY: Violet covered the Greek battles against Darius and Xerxes at Marathon, Thermophylae, Salamis, and Plataea reading chapters 45-53 of Guerber's The Story of the Greeks. She wrote 2 paragraph summaries and a longer 3 paragraph one.

SCIENCE: Violet worked on chapter 14 in BJU Life Science this week. This is the last chapter in the first book. Yeah! Almost halfway there. I had planned to do some catch up labs, but with Henry sick I ended up sitting and snuggling with him instead. We'll try again next week.

FINE ARTS: Art is in Thursday's post. No music for Violet either because I forgot to check out the book.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742687985614907420.post-84500387823793917622014-01-10T13:01:00.000-08:002014-01-12T13:31:04.383-08:00Week 18 LG: Homer, the Olympics, and Giraffes

Both boys were sick for part of the week, but they still managed to complete all of their scheduled school work. I made sure that I worked twice each day with Henry, which he was very excited about. Overall they had a great week despite being sick.

MATH: Benny finished up his IP section on area and perimeter and completed the final review exercises in his 4A textbook and workbook this week. In CWP 4, he was completing problems involving angles.

LOGIC: His BTS mostly involved description of overlapping figures. He also completed another Mind Benders puzzle and an advanced Rush Hour card.
ENGLISH: He wrapped up the final exercises of chapter 5 in R&S covering verb pairs like lay/lie, set/sit, and can/may and also completed the chapter test on Friday. He completed the 16th lesson in SWO E covering prefixes like fore- or pre- and began the 17th lesson. In literature, he finished the remaining 2 chapters of the 4th Odyssey book by Osbourne and read all of the 5th book. His CW analyzed the fable "The Lark and Her Young Ones". Together, we read the final chapters of Colum's The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles.

LATIN: Latin grammar covered the imperfect endings of verbs for chapter 17. Next week we'll finally be adding in the first Latin history reader as well.

HISTORY: We covered chapter 20 in SOTW reading about Homer and the Olympics, but skipped reading the Odysseus story found in the chapter since he's already covered it in literature. In addition to the corresponding mapwork, we also read part of In Search of Troy by Ventura and all of I Wonder Why the Greeks Build Temples and Other Things by MacDonald.

SCIENCE: In addition to giraffes (whose poor babies, we found out start life with a 6 foot fall onto their head), we read about Okapi and and overview of family Suidae.

ART: His bird in a cage watercolor is in Thursday's post. No music this week. I forgot to check the books out on Saturday.

Henry's K

I wanted more structure to Henry's time for the remainder of the year, and we are off to a good start. In math, we reviewed counting by 1s and 10s and he actually counted correctly by 5s for the first time. We also began doing some pages in Miquon Orange matching rods to the number of objects in a square, working on number identification, and even a bit of number writing. His BTS Primary is still working with patterns, and he's much happier completing those pages without the various blocks.

In the language arts area, Henry and I slowly worked our way through 2 pages of Phonics Pathways and also started the first Explode the Code book. We covered the pretest and the first 4 pages on the short a sound. Most of it was done orally, but I did have him write a few a's as well. For our read aloud, we picked back up with Warner's Surprise Island. I also drew writing lines on his draw erase board, and he practiced writing the letters A, a, B, b, C, c, D, and d.

Henry's also listening to Bible stories from Egermeier's Bible Story book. This week we read about Samson and Ruth. I'm counting this as both Bible and history although he does sometimes listen in with Benny for SOTW 1. I also dug out an old workbook on animals to read to him. The animals are grouped by region and starts appropriately enough with the Arctic and Antarctic. We read about caribou, lemmings, ermines, musk ox, and orcas this week. I picked a couple of questions from below the text to ask him about (giving him multiple choice when needed). He also made a paper bag reindeer. Our bag was white, so he painted it brown. We cut his hand prints out of light brown cardstock (since we were out of construction paper) and used them for antlers. Then we added paper eyes and a nose. He also did a bit of Kumon each day.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742687985614907420.post-19549534876709345512014-01-09T17:32:00.000-08:002014-01-11T17:51:53.901-08:00Creative Corner: A Pot and a Bird in a Cage

GEOMETRY: Jessie completed chapter 6 and scored another A. After a couple of weeks on quadrilaterals in chapter 7, she received a high B on that test and moved on to chapter 8 covering reflections, rotations, and translations. She made it through all of the new material in the chapter and will start with the review sets after Christmas.

ENGLISH: In R&S, she completed chapter 5 on word usage, scored a perfect 100 on her test, completed chapter 6 on the argumentative essay with another perfect test, and worked part of the way through chapter 7 on substantives. She also did very well on her vocabulary tests for lessons 41 to 44. She continued working through the lesson on the argumentative essay in Herodotus and the overlap in topics with grammar made it difficult to get all of the work done. Nonetheless she completed most of the work for weeks 14 to 16. We'll take a catch up week after break.

GREAT BOOKS: She finished her essay on The Iliad and began reading Homer's The Odyssey supplemented by the Vandiver lectures from Teaching Company. Since we took a break earlier and I couldn't renew the lectures from the library, she finished up the reading and lectures on Monday, Thursday, and Friday of Christmas week.

SPANISH: Jessie covered lesson 12 to 15 over the four week span. Vocabulary topics included more -ar verbs and words related to shopping, print materials, and Christmas. Her grammar covered the conjugation of -er and -ir verbs as well as irregular verbs like ir, dar, ver, and venir. She also learned some constructions with infinitives, the present progressive, and direct object pronouns..

LATIN: She finished chapter 23 and all the book work for chapter 24. I had hoped that she could get the quiz in before break, but with the push to finish the Odyssey it was pushed back to January..

HISTORY: Jessie continued learning about ancient Greece covering 4 more lectures from Nobel and more Spielvogel..

SCIENCE: Somewhere in this block, she finally finished chapter 5. I'm going to lighten her English load after break to have more time for her other subjects especially science..

MUSIC APPRECIATION: She's listened to 4 more lectures which have moved on from Bach to Mendelssohn and Handel as well as 2 CDs from each composer..

Violet's 7th Grade.

MATH: Violet finished the Lials' chapter on decimals and switch back to NEM. She completed chapters 2 and 3 on fractions, decimals, and word problems and began working with real numbers in chapter 4 before Christmas break..

LANGUAGE ARTS: She completed the first Caesar's English book. In R&S she finished the 4th and 5th chapters on verbs and began working on pronouns. By break she was at the end of the 4th unit's theory section in CW and had finished reading both White Fang by London as well as The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien. She wrote a book report for London's book and will start off the new year with a book report on Tolkien..

LANGUAGES: She breezed through chapter 12 covering uses of the genitive case, covered chapter 13 on the imperfect and future tenses of the third conjugation, completed the third unit, and reviewed third declension i-stem in chapter 14. She didn't do well on her chapter 13 quiz with a lot of mistakes especially in the vocabulary area, so she'll work on studying vocabulary before retaking the quiz after break. She completed four more Greek lessons on personal pronouns and conjunctions.

HISTORY: Violet continued studying Greece covering chapters 6 to 30 of Guerber covering the Minoans, Mycenaens, Sparta, the Messenian wars, and early Athens. Additional reading included In Search of Knosses and In Search of Troy by Caselli. As always there was a combination of outlines from the encyclopedia, summaries, and 2-3 paragraph essays.

SCIENCE: She completed chapters 11 and 12 covering protists, fungi, and plant structure and also started chapter 13 on plant processes. We'll work on adding labs back in regularly after break.

FINE ARTS: Art is in a separate post. She took most of the weeks off from music.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742687985614907420.post-8789655173051063082014-01-03T13:31:00.000-08:002014-01-11T17:29:07.838-08:00Weeks 14-17 LG:

Benny's 4th Grade

MATH: Benny completed the textbook and corresponding IP sections on tables and graphs, perpendicular and parallel lines, and angles as well as most of the textbook section on area and perimeter before we stopped for Christmas break this year. He also wroked through 3 different sections in the CWP 4 book.

CRITICAL THINKING: He started the MindBenders A4 book, continued his BTS work, and worked on the intermediate level Rush Hour puzzles. He got stuck on one or two, so we used the directions to solve the board, reset the pieces, and tried a second time without the directions.

ENGLISH: He completed 6 SWO E lessons by doing a few pages the week of Thanksgiving and doubling up one day to get finish lesson 15 before break. In grammar he completed chapters 4 & 5 of R&S 4 both covering verbs. He completed Gentle Ben literature and began reading through Osbourne's 6 book series covering the Odyssey. He ended up most of the way through the 4th book. His writing for CW Aesop included narrating "The Eagle and the Fox" as well as analyzing and rewriting "The Cock in the Fox". I then gave him the 4th week off, so he wasn't splitting a fable over the break. He also did copywork 5 days a week and dictation 3 days a week. For reading aloud to me, we began using the short stories in the first Reading Detective workbook on days where we didn't have a new CW model. We managed to make it most of the way through Collum's book about the Golden Fleece but will have a few chapters to finish after the holidays.

LATIN: He zipped through the chapter 13 review as well as chapters 14-16 covering 2nd conjugation verbs, sentence patterns, and the imperfect tense.

HISTORY: In history we covered the Assyrian, Babylonian, Minoan, and Mycenaen civilization using chapters 16 to 19 of SOTW. We also read the first section of chapter 20 covering Homer. Additional reading included The Seven Voyages of Sinbad teh Sailor by Riordan, Theseus and the Minotaur by Fisher, and Atlantis: the Lost City by Donkin. Other than the map work, the only hands on was to write his name in Greek. He did draw the Trojan horse one week for art.
After encountering our first four letter work in one of A2 series Bob books, Benny and I spent some time working on blending a three letter word together without sounding it out first using some of the review pages in Phonics Pathways that we had previously covered. We also started the first page of the 4 letter work section before break. For read aloud, we finished Charlotte's Web and began reading Surprise Island by Warner. The rest of his school time was more relaxed, and we did as much or as little as we felt like. I decided to take some time over Christmas break to write out some more intentional plans for the new year. The picture showh on the left was completed completely by Henry. He called the bottom part a fire with some strips of meat roasting over top under some round stars in the sky. I love seeing how creative he can be at times.

LOGIC: His Building Thinking Skills 2 lessons have focused on symmetry, and he has completed two more word problems.
He rewrote the fable "The Wind and the Sun" and analyzed "The Boy Bathing" in CW, completed more copywork and dictation, and continued to progress through SWO E. His grammar continues to cover nouns with a bit of poetry thrown in for a couple of lessons as well.

ART & MUSIC: Art is in the previous post. We did some catchup for music covering the double bassoon, the harp, an overview of the woodwind section, and the flute in Story of the Orchestra.
LATIN: Benny's Latin focus for the past two weeks has been neuter nouns in the second declension. We've added some extra drill time for vocabulary and chants, which seems to be helping with the lessons.

SCIENCE: In Zoology 3 we covered the aardwolf, mongoose, and meerkat before moving on to a new chapter about marsupials. In that chapter we've read about kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats, possums, moles, Tasmanian devils, and opossums.
Henry has been working on 3 letter words in Phonics Pathways. It's been taking several days to complete each page due to the number of words per page and his attention span, but we're making slow progress. Our new chapter book is The Boxcar Children. We've done some more skip counting, number matching, and number writing for math. In BTS Primary, he's been using various blocks to make larger figures, and he continues to zip through the VPSB 1 book.
Over the past two weeks, Jessie has completed the geometry chapter on angles, it's associated review and test, and began chapter 4 on triangles.

In English, she completed a review week in vocabulary and the first chapter of the second unit. She also completed her second unit of grammar and began working with various types of phrases and clauses in unit 3. Her CW work all dealt with stasis theory where she had to determine if an act/crime had occurred, what type of crime it was, what degree of the crime was, and what procedure should be taken. She applied this to various literature selections including Cain and Abel, Agamemnon, and Eumenides. We need to pick back up with Lost World for discussion and writing this week.

In Great Books, she has completed listening through the 10th Teaching Company lecture and read through the 21st book of The Iliad.

In Spanish she spent a week covering the use of estar for location or condition with the associated vocabulary then a week of the use of ser for characteristics and identification. She also learned the position of adjectives and some basic adverbs.

In Latin Alive 2 she has now completed through chapter 22 and reviewed Latin numbers and demonstrative pronouns.

For Ancient History, she covered the remainder of the information on Egypt as well as a brief section on megalithic sites and the two associated focus questions. In History of the Ancient World she has taken notes on 6 more chapters. She also completed a map of the Hittite Empire.

She is currently 2 weeks behind in Biology after bogging down in both the organic chemistry chapter and the basic cell chapter. I'm considering making some changes but haven't settled on a solution at this point.

For her Music Appreciation credit, she wrote paragraphs on Renaissance music for church and secular events. I found several CDs at our local library, and so far she has listened to "Requiem" by Rutter and "Madrigals" by The King's Singers.

Violet has slowly worked her way through chapter 2 of Lials solving equations. Several of the sections I had her work the odds one day and the evens the next for additional practice. It wasn't that she didn't get the concepts, but the amount of careless errors was frustrating.

She continues working through BTS 3 Figural and we covered tu quoque and genetic fallacies in Art of Argument.

She also completed her second unit of CW and began working on the third. In Caesar's English, she completed through lesson 8 and working on 9. We're also working on how to study flash cards on independently. She's been reading Lost World by Doyle for literature and is working through the second analysis section of CW.

In Latin, she is almost finished with chapter 8. She completed the last lesson of review in EG 1 and learned about the use of the accusative case for direct objects in lesson 7.

Violet's history of the last two weeks has involved readings from both Payne's The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt as well as The Usborne Encyclopedia of the Ancient World. She's has covered the Old Kingdom and the First Intermediate Period and has also written paragraphs on temples and pyramids.

She's up to chapter 7 of Life Science, but I think I need to set aside some time over the next two weeks to specifically work on how to take notes from a textbook.

Her music she has been doing independently at her own pace, and I honestly have no idea what she's covered the last two weeks. Benny continued working with fractions this week in Singapore math focusing on mixed numbers and improper fractions. He finished the regular problems in the last review section of CWP 3 and has only the challenging ones left before moving on to the next book.

His BTS focused on congruent and non-congruent shapes made from dividing squares or rectangles. He completed another MindBenders puzzle as well.

He finished his second unit in R&S 4 as well as his second SWO E lesson. He began reading Lad: A Dog independently, and we continued The Golden Goblet as our read aloud selection. For CW, he analyzed the fable "The Wind and the Sun" and completed his regular copywork and dictation.

In Latin, he worked with 2nd declension masculine nouns and the present tense conjugation of sum, esse.

All of the history reading this week came from SOTW 1. We covered chapters 7 and 8 on Hammurabi and the Babylonians, Shamsi Adad and the Assyrians, and the "Epic of Gilgamesh". He completed narrations on all three topics as well as the mapwork for both chapters. DH was off on Wednesday, so he skipped the hands on activity to spend time with him.

His reading in Zoology 3 covered tigers, bobcats, cougars, lynx, and hyenas.
Henry continued working on sounding out 3 letters words in Phonics Pathways. We continued our Bible readings, but didn't start a new chapter book this week. I took a break from scheduled readings and let him pick whatever he wanted instead. He also completed some more work out of his Kumon books.
Benny finished his IP section on double digit multiplication and long division and began working on addition and subtraction of fractions this week. In his CWP3 book, he began the final section of review problems.

For BTS, he was looking for matching shapes within a shape that had missing or added lines. His MindBenders required a little help since he wasn't familiar with the TV shows that it referenced.

His first spelling test in SWO E didn't go as well as I would like, so I had him copy the words he missed several times and retested the following day. He covered commands and exclamations in grammar and finished reading My Side of the Mountain by Grant. We began a new read aloud, The Golden Goblet by . In CW, he narrated the fable "The Lion and the Bulls". We reviewed the definitions of the different types of sentences for cursive copywork and did our first dictation out of a real book Charlotte's Web.

His LfC A lesson introduced masculine nouns this week as well as the corresponding masculine words for master, slave, friend, etc. which he easily memorized since he had already learned the feminine words.

We didn't get to music this week. His art is in the previous post.

We covered the Israelites in chapter 6 of SOTW for history covering the time span from Abraham to Joseph and also read the corresponding VP cards. All of it was review because he's been reading Genesis in A Child's Bible Book by Vos. I did end up editing quite a bit of the SOTW chapter where it was adding details not found in Genesis. We completed the corresponding map, and he did the word search for his hands on activity.

In science, we discussed the chapter 3 experiment but skipped doing it because he could already tell me what would happen. We began chapter 4 covering felines and went over some general information.

Henry began working with three letter words in phonics this week. We did our regular counting and practiced writing some numbers. In BTS, he combined two shapes to make the new shape on the page and he began a new section in VPSB1 that had a shape to match with lots of scribbly lines and dots around and over the choices. We did a much better job of getting through his different Kumon books, but didn't end up with as much reading as I had planned. Other than Bible reading and our chapter book The Dragons of Blueland by Gannet we only read 2 science books on panda bears.
